This is one pretty awesome tutorial book.
NOPE, I haven't started drawing with it yet, guess what? I'm starting to sell my drawings to raise money to buy an X-Box and I KNOW that this will help me MAKE MONEEEEY!

Anyway, there's something I can't STAND about drawing tutorial books...

I have to be honest though. This entire book isn't filled with step-by-step drawings. There are some examples drawn, and then there are some examples placed down. (There are quite a few step-by-steps in here, and they're actually pretty good.)

But this book is more like it's filled with...IDEAS.

It shows you examples of all kinds of things. I'll list them for you guys.

1. 20 Female Hairstyles
2. 20 Male Hairstyles
3. 101 pairs of Manga Eyes
4. 12 Common Facial Expressions
5. 20 Chibi Emotions (My favorite.)
6. 50 Hand Positions
7. 50 Feet Positions
8. 6 Walking Positions
9. 5 Examples of Displays of Affection (Kissing and hugging--the drawings are actually pretty adorable.)
10. 4 Examples of Action/Fighting positions
11. 30 Classic Poses (Whether standing, sitting, or lying on your stomach and kicking your legs up.)
12. How to draw folds in clothing (details and such)for pants, jeans, shirts, shorts, skirts, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, school uniform, sweaters and jackets. 24 Examples in all.
13. And examples of proportional settings (backgrounds).

I like this book because it gives me ideas. Seriously, LOOK HOW MANY THERE ARE.
And these ideas will get into your head, and they'll branch off into more ideas, and more ideas will branch off from those, and then more and more and more until your head is full of ideas and you're going to draw a freaking amazing manga strip because of how awesome your ideas are that came from these ones in this book.

So technically, these ideas will end up giving you hundreds of thousands of possibilities. Think about it.

When I was younger, my idea of a good drawing book was something that could show me how to draw something SPECIFIC.
"I WANT TO DRAW A MAGICAL GIRL THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE SAILOR MOON, EXCEPT NOT SAILOR MOON! I WANT HER TO BE PINK AND HAVE SUPER FLUFFY FRILLS!!"
So I was on a mission to search for a tutorial with a step-by-step for a pink Sailor Moon with super fluffy frills. And I never encountered that book because...what kind of crazy soul would want to draw a pink, super frilly Sailor Moon?!

(Me.)

I wanted something with step-by-step tutorials that I could use and copy off of. But that's not original!
You see, Mark Crilley's book says, "Mastering Manga with Mark Crilley".
NOT "Mastering Manga LIKE Mark Crilley".

I mean if I was showing somebody how to draw, it really all depends on what they want.

Request 1: "Theresa, can you show me how to draw manga?"
Request 2: "Theresa, can you show me how to draw exactly like you do?"

I can do both, actually. Sort of.

Response to R1: "Sure. First, think of what characters you want to draw."
Response to R2: "Sure. First, you have to draw an eye. JUST LIKE THIS." (*draws eye) "Now copy me. THE EXACT SAME THING. And you'll have a Theresa eye."

You see?
This book shows you the basics of manga, but it's giving you an opportunity to draw what YOU want to draw. You decide what to draw, and it will show you how.
Like if you want to draw a girl with super poofy hair. It will give you a tutorial that most likely says, "You should make the hair very big and volumized." NOT "You should make the hair EXACTLY LIKE THIS. (*gives example)"

Besides, you learn more that way. You get to expand your imagination to what YOU want it to be. It's your own originality. And those of you who read my reviews know how I feel about originality, right?
IT'S A MUST FOR EVERY SOUL! Everyone's different, you know!!!

Besides, the examples that this guy gives are really good looking.
HE IS ONE AWESOME DRAWER.

And not only are there some step-by-steps and a bunch of good examples, he also EXPLAINS tips and tricks that you can use to be just as awesome as he is.

AND it really does show you how to draw manga. Because not only are there drawings and examples here to show you how to DRAW, he also shows how to STRUCTURE manga.
The best place to structure your panels. The best way to show the reader something awesome to read.

So, if you want IDEAS, this is the book to come to. Let your imagination branch from these ideas and BOOM.
You've got some awesome manga to draw.

So because of the big smiley face that this guy gave me. I give this libro 5 stars.

So, of course I'm biased, since I had a hand in this book, but honestly, Mark hits it out of the park. If you're interested in learning how to draw manga, or improving your skills, then Mastering Manga With Mark Crilley is THE book to start with.

You'll start off by learning how to draw people's faces from different angles, and not just cute manga teens, but people of all ages and sizes, so that your world can have a diverse population. Then, he moves on to bodies and different poses and actions -- come on, you want to draw people kissing, don't you? Kissing, fighting, walking, all of these are covered.

Additionally, in these sections you get tons of info on hairstyles, hands, feet, eyes, different body proportion styles and so much more.

Finally, he moves on to building a scene, and this is where Mark really takes you to school. It's not just about drawing a good head and body; now it's putting your character in a setting, in a sequence of art boxes. He shows how to draw using different perspectives, building up sequential art, word balloons... you'll learn all the things you need to take your art to the next level.

A book for beginners. This is a good starting point for aspiring artists. This will help you begin to understand artistic concepts taught in formal art classes. But the tips aren't all for everyone, so take them with a grain of salt.

I personally didn't find it helpful, but it was interesting and held my attention.

Considering that I wasn't even able to "hold" the pen the right way after some trying and following the instructions in the book I actually managed to create something worth showing others. I am impressed by myself :) it is kind of dummies proof. Would have liked a little bit more explain on the poses and faces but I do hope for another book(books) that explain in a more detailed way the particular poses..or chibi's :D Nice job Mark! Mark Crilley does manga in a tasteful way, and I am super appreciative that he excludes unclean images in his drawing books! Not only is he very talented, he does lots of art, from realism to chibi!

This is the best Manga tutorial book I've read. It helps you with every aspect of Manga- from creating characters to drawing those characters in different poses or scenes. But better than that: it gives you IDEAS. Crilley not only teaches you how to draw Manga but he also encourages you to develop your own style and use your imagination.

The book is split into three big chapters:

1. Heads and Faces
Crilley shows you how to draw a range of male and female faces in front view, three-quarter view and

Crilley shows you how to draw a range of male and female faces in front view, three-quarter view and profile view. Not only that but he also shows you how to draw older characters, younger characters and fuller figure characters. It's very useful, although I modified my own drawings to suit my style.

In this chapter Crilley also gives you:

20 Female Hairstyles
20 Male Hairstyles
101 Manga Eyes
12 Common Manga Facial Expressions

The possibilities are endless! Crilley gives you everything you need to start creating your own Manga characters, which should always start with the head and face- they're the most important parts.

2. Proportions and Poses
Here Crilley shows you how to draw Manga people in proportion. He gives you advice on how to make them look realistic or super-deformed- Chibis, which are really cute by the way. He shows you various poses such as walking, running, kissing, hugging and fighting. He even shows you how to make clothes look more authentic by adding wrinkles to them- this is really useful!

In this chapter Crilley also gives you:

20 Chibi Emotions
50 Ways to Draw Hands
50 Ways to Draw Feet
30 Classic Poses

Crilley gives you guidance on every aspect of creating characters. And it's really impressive.

3. Setting the Scene
In this chapter, Crilley teaches you about perspective. I found this really interesting and informative because it's something I've never really thought about before- but it's highly important if you're going to be drawing Manga. Crilley also gives you tips on inking, page layouts, Manga sequencing, word balloons and even shows you an actual example of one of the pages from Brody's Ghost to show you his own process when creating Manga. Although this chapter is probably the least fun, it's very important and any new Manga artist would need to study it if they hope to make an awesome Manga.

I've read through this book a few times now but I'm going to work through each tutorial more slowly. I'm so glad I bought this book; it is so worth the money.

Mastering Manga

Great book, very detailed images to follow along. Yours may not turn out exactly like his, but that's why you can turn back the page and start again. Practice. I loved this book, I've been struggling with faces and hair and he definitely touched up on those topics so my characters got an upgrade from squiggly dot eyes and strands of hair. If in doubt, your just not quite getting it... Look him up on YouTube.

A complete step-by-step on how to draw manga. I started drawing not that long ago, and this book was interesting enough to have invest every single day to practicing and becoming better. Besides this and other books, Mark Crilley is a YouTube guru that knows how to teach in a dynamic and fun way. I highly recommend this book to aspiring manga artists.

This book contains the entire how to draw manga faces. Don't buy that book, just get this one instead. I guess I shouldn't have bought the Kindle edition and instead reviewed the book in person.

Easy to follow directions with lots of examples of body parts ( hands etc. ) in different poses. Not a complete course by any means. Fantastic guide for beginners who would like to learn how to draw humans, and not just in the manga way.
I'll be coming back to this book frequently as I will practice my drawing skills.

This is a very difficult book for me to review, because Mark Crilley is a super nice guy and is a great ambassador for drawing. His Youtube videos are really enjoyable to watch and he actually searched out a couple of drawings I did from this book on Deviantart and said nice things about them. That is the kind of guy I'm happy to support by buying his books and it makes it very tempting to give the book a high score just for that.

With that said, Mastering Manga was not the ideal book for me to learn from and I encourage you to read this and draw your own conclusions about whether you should own this book. I draw primarily by reference and Crilley tries to teach art techniques to you instead of a lot of step-by-step instruction. I think it is commendable that he teaches you this way and if it works for you, then I think you can become a very good artist (probably more talented than me!). For me though, I need to draw by referencing something and a lot of the drawings do not get you excited to draw them or they are too small to easily replicate. Many of the lessons are how to draw a head or how to draw a figure standing straight up (often in their underwear). These are good places to start but they do not get you excited about drawing Manga. Crilley also shows a lot of important techniques if you actually want to make a Manga like speech bubbles and how to use panels to tell a story. In my opinion, this book does not make you good enough at drawing to be ready for these types of advanced lessons. I'm not criticizing Mark on that either, it would be impossible for him to teach you everything you needed in one book. It just seems like later parts of this book might have been more helpful for beginning and intermediate artists.

I don't want to sound down about this book either. Mark has a great style that is kind of Shoujo, but with a little smaller eyes. The characters are cute and charming. I did draw some great looking chibis from this book and I think for the right person, you could really improve your art by reading Mastering Manga. If you are like me and draw by reference or want step-by-step instruction then I would recommend flipping through this book and through the competitor's book to decide what is best for you.

Mark's book is a REAL how-to draw manga book, and allows you to understand and demonstrate how to draw EVERYONE--not just boring teens--but fuller-bodied characters, adults, children, AND MORE!!
Unlike other how-to-draw-manga books, he also allows you to extend your horizons with different styles and sizes and techniques! The illustrations are gorgeous and he understands how hard it is to draw and gets you started with the basics.
I will definitely be buying the next one as well as his own graphic novels. Thankfully, I want to create my own manga, and this has helped me develop my drawing accuracy and overall improved my skills (and I haven't even finished it). Right now I'm progressing through just the faces & heads sections, but I've nearly filled up my sketchbook!
His videos on youtube are also awesome, and I understand why his doesn't give tons of information about guidelines - it's because he published a book while helps you with that! I also want to start making how-to-draw videos (which are really hard) and I'm not very great at drawing.
Really inspring and helpful. <3 Mark Crilley. He is awesome. And I have a prismacolour pencil too XD

What's more is that it also goes into proportions, poses, and even scenery; touching on perspective, crosshatching, comics layouts, etc.

Although technically I haven't read the book, i have benefitted from it so much. The instructions in this book are so clear and simple, yet teach you how to create amazing artwork. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in drawing manga as it not only teaches you how to draw bodies, faces, and eyes correctly etc. it also teaches how to draw things such as backgrounds and different age ranges of people, as well as including really helpful study pages of things such a Although technically I haven't read the book, i have benefitted from it so much. I'm a huge fan of Mark Crilley, and I really loved this book. Buy it. Love it. Learn from it.

The only thing I have to say is that I can't really follow the step-by-step process that he has because I draw differently. Using his lines and shapes is difficult for me. But the book is extremely helpful with poses, eyes, hair, etc.

A great book by a great artist!

(If you don't want or can't to buy this book, I recommend looking up his videos on YouTube. He has new videos up every Friday.)

If u want to improve your drawing skills this is definitely for u there's this one and number two.Me I hate drawing books but this isn't like a drawing book it has one 30 lessons and it's just amazing it doesn't make far less like the head then the next picture is the neck the eyes the most and nose it's so simple even my son could do no lie lol.but this is by far the best thing u could get for these types of drawings

Love his youtube videos and I love his book! Great illustrations and lessons. he cover most (I would say all but I don't know everything about drawing) of the problems of beginner artists.
